It was the moment the entire fashion industry had patiently waited 18 months for, the debut of Belgian designer Raf Simons’ couture collection for Christian Dior. On Monday, July 2, the wait was finally over. Editors, designers, socialites and royalty alike sat in anticipation waiting for the designer’s first couture collection ever to walk the runway. Who’s who in fashion came out to support their fellow comrade. From legends like Pierre Cardin, Marc Jacobs and Donatella Versace to famous editors such as Anna Wintour and Hamish Bowles the show drew fashion’s A-list. Not to mention the celebs and royalty that attended, Marion Cotillard and the Princess Charlene of Monaco looked exquisite as they anxiously awaited the first look.
The venue—a private Parisian mansion on Avenue d’lena lined with floor-to-ceiling flowers set the stage for Simon’s debut at the French fashion house. Celebrating the history of the house, Raf artistically accessed the archives with a narrative from the 1930’s and 40’s. Updating iconic silhouettes such as the ‘Bar Jacket,’ he brought his own modern twist to the classics. Past and present collided in the form of slim trousers, pretty peplum, full skirts, voluminous gowns and pointed-toe pumps. The collection was a contemporary vision of couture, a modern idea with an innovative energy. Simons stated after the show, “I’m not interested in just doing couture that works in magazine pictures. I want it to be relevant,” and that is exactly what his first collection was relevant. Bravo! Job well done.
