Atelier Versace marked the beginning of Paris haute couture week last night with an emotional homecoming at the Hôtel Ritz. Paying tribute to her brother, the late Gianni Versace, Donatella returned to the house’s original stomping grounds for the first time since 1997. It was a star-studded event with the likes of Jessica Alba, Fan Bingbing, Pierce Brosnan, Christina Hendricks, Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison sitting front row. Reminiscent of the famous nightclub Studio 54, the Ritz’s pool was transformed into a giant disco, fit for any dancing queen.
Inspired by powerful symbols from tarot cards, the collection was filled with elemental metaphors and universal truths transposed onto weightless, luminous gowns and short corseted minis. Crystal mesh, pearl and silicone details reflected an opalescent light that captured the sheer craftsmanship of each silhouette. Sultry slashes, layered silk, hand-cut leather and luscious lacing were artistically placed, creating an abstract feeling. Rich jewel tones such as topaz, emerald, yellow and rose mixed with soft nudes made up the autumn colour palette. After the show, Donatella remarked, “It was very emotional. I had to get up my courage to come back.” You would never know it, she was definitely “Puttin’ on the Ritz” last night!

Sue Fleming says
Donatella created the most fabulous collection this season. Her brother, Gianni, would be so proud of her. She stayed true to the colorful Versace style—but added such a feminine look with the sheer fabric.
